Contractor: CLC Group
Client: Southampton City Council
Type of works: Fire Door Manufacture & Installation
Ahmarra manufactured and installed over 120 fire doorsets for Graylings Retirement Home in Southampton, as part of a council housing project.
The comprehensive doorset package included FD30s fire & smoke-rated communal area doors for corridors, stairwells, storage areas and riser cupboards, as well as FD30s flat entrance doorsets and glazed side screens.
Fire Certified
Third-party certified under the BM TRADA Q-Mark Timber Fire Door Manufacture scheme, the FD30s fire & smoke rated pre-hung doorsets were supplied as complete units. This means that the door leaves were pre-hung within their frames and supplied with all essential hardware components (ironmongery, glazing systems, intumescent seals, drop down seals etc) factory fitted, as is standard with our Residential Door Range.
Sustainable
Ahmarra is an FSC® certified (FSC C018847) company, as such all of the timber doors and frames supplied for this social housing project support responsible forestry.
Durable
Built for durability, each severe-duty doorset is finished with semi-concealed American White Ash lippings on all four edges, helping to protect the core and extend the door’s lifespan. The doors are faced with impact-resistant high-pressure laminate – communal doors feature Polyrey’s Bleu Carabies (B086), riser and storage area doors feature Polyrey’s Blanc Artic (B117), and flat entrance doorsets are finished in Formica’s Elegant Oak (F5374) wood-effect laminate. To further enhance durability, each door features stainless steel protection plates. Including over-sized kick plates, providing additional protection particularly from walking aids.
Accessible
The doorsets are fully compliant with BS 8300 and Part M of the Building Regulations, which set out requirements for inclusive design and accessibility for people with disabilities. As a result, all doorways provide a clear opening width that allows easy access for all residents and staff – including those using wheelchairs or walking aids – ensuring full usability throughout the retirement complex.
To enhance natural light and visibility, many communal area doors are fitted with our standard VP01 vision panels, which meet the minimum zone of visibility requirements outlined in BS 8300.
To aid accessibility, corridor doors are fitted with electromagnetic closers with built-in hold-open functionality. These closers keep doors open for ease of movement around the building, but automatically release the doors so that they close when the fire alarm is activated, helping to compartmentalise fire and smoke. All closers used require minimal opening force, making them easy to operate for all residents.
Installation
The doors were fitted by both Ahmarra and CLC Group’s installation teams. Our Q-Mark Fire Door Installation team hold accreditations with Constructionline Gold, CHAS (Contractors’ Health and Safety Assessment Scheme), and SafeContractor, ensuring a high standard of safety, whilst reducing supply chain risk.
