Contractor: Dryden Carpentry & Kier
Client: Bournemouth & Poole College
Type of works: Q-Mark Fire Door Manufacture

Ahmarra were proud to manufacture over 250 Q-Mark certified fire & smoke-rated doorsets, non-fire rated doorsets, and a number of glazed screens, for Bournemouth & Poole College’s Lansdowne campus.

The doorsets were designed for the new purpose-built teaching facility, which will provide high-quality learning environments for delivering vocational training in Travel & Tourism, Hair & Beauty, Hospitality & Catering, Digital Media, Computing & IT and Sport & Fitness.

Designed by Noviun Architects and constructed by Kier, Ahmarra were selected by Dryden Carpentry to manufacture the bespoke timber doorsets and glazed screens. Doorsets were provided for various areas across the college including; classrooms, IT suites, offices, meeting rooms, kitchens, toilets, changing rooms and the sports hall, as well as circulation areas and riser cupboards.

Fire & Smoke Certified

These FD30, FD30s and FD60s pre-hung doorsets are third-party certified under the Q-Mark Timber Fire Door Manufacture scheme. Operated by BM TRADA, an independent certification body, Q-Mark is considered to be one of the most rigorous certification processes within the UK. Supplied as complete units – as is standard with our Education Door Range – door leaves were pre-hung within their frames with all essential hardware components (ironmongery, glazing systems, intumescent seals, drop down seals etc) factory fitted ensuring compliance and quality. By specifying pre-hung doorsets, installation is made quicker and easier – diminishing the need for adjustments, minimising noise & dust and reducing on-site labour costs.

Sustainability

Ahmarra is an FSC® certified (FSC C018847) company, as such all of the timber doors and frames supplied for the college support responsible forestry.

Durability

Designed to withstand busy academic environments, each severe-duty doorset features American White Oak lippings on all four edges, which enhances the door’s lifespan. Doors are faced with Formica’s high pressure laminate, with its scratch and abrasion resistance qualities, whilst the stainless steel protection plates provide an additional layer of resilience.

Accessibility

The doorsets have been specified following the principals of designing an accessible and inclusive environment (BS 8300). Providing compliant clear opening widths, allowing staff, students, and visitors – including wheelchair users – to move through the building safely and comfortably.

To enhance natural daylight and improve visibility throughout the college, many classroom and communal area doors are fitted with standard VP01 slot vision panels. Wider VP02 vision panels were used in the hair dressing salon and restaurant. Both vision panel types satisfy the minimum visibility requirements set out in BS 8300. Many classroom doors are also complemented by glazed side screens.

Decorative Facings

Doors are faced with high pressure laminate, in predominantly monochrome tones, complementing the clean, neutral interior design scheme. The majority of doors are faced with Formica’s Dark Ash (F8575) wood grain effect laminate, whilst changing room doors feature Ventura Oak (F5873), a lighter wood grain effect laminate. Store and plant room doors, as well as riser doors, are faced with Formica’s White (F0949) laminate.

Each floor of this four-storey building incorporates an accent colour within its design scheme to signify which level the building user is on. As such, communal area doors – including lift lobby and stairwell doors – are faced with solid colour laminates that match the level’s colour, aiding way finding particularly for new students.

As such, the first floor communal doors feature Formica’s Spectrum Yellow (F7940), second floor doors feature orange Lavente (F3210), third floor doors feature muted lilac Heather (F0233) and the fourth floor doors feature Leaf Green (F8820).
