What is a certified fire door, and what is third-party certification?

Fire doors form an essential part of a building’s passive fire protection strategy, preventing the passage of fire and smoke from one compartment to another. UK fire door manufacturers have a legal requirement to evidence the ability of their doors to resist the passage and spread of fire to a specified standard. That documented evidence is often referred to as the ‘certification’. In order for a fire door to be certified, it must have undergone fire testing. Once tested, the fire door must be manufactured to the same configuration, and in line with the approved scope.

However, it is not a mandatory requirement under Building Regulations for fire doors to be third-party certified. Third-party certification means that the fire door manufacturer has undergone a rigorous audit and testing process conducted by an impartial, independent, third-party specialist body. This involves having documented product specifications, installation instructions and strictly controlled factory production processes.

Specifying third-party certified fire doors is the most effective way to ensure that the critical fire safety standards, required under Approved Document B of the Building Regulations, are achieved. Ahmarra strongly endorse third-party certification, and as such, are a member of the Q-Mark Fire Door Manufacture scheme. Our timber fire doorsets are independently tested by a UKAS accredited testing facility, and are certified under the BM TRADA Q-Mark Fire Door Manufacture scheme, providing an additional level of assurance – beyond the legal requirements – that our doors are fit for purpose through on-going compliance to the original product specification. Q-Mark certification is a third-party product certification scheme for construction and building products. Operated by BM TRADA, an independent certification body, it is considered to be one of the most rigorous certification processes within the UK.

How do you specify a fire door?

Fire resistant doors form an essential part of a building’s passive fire protection strategy, preventing the passage of fire and smoke from one compartment to another. They can be a complex part of any construction project. Getting the design and specification correct in the early stages of your project will help to ensure that it is delivered on time and within budget.
The key considerations when specifying internal fire doors are;

  • Fire and smoke ratings
  • Acoustic ratings
  • Configuration
  • Dimensions
  • Facings and finishes
  • Handing
  • Frames, architraves and door stops
  • Vision panels
  • Intumescent and smoke seals
  • Lippings
