Client: Rowans Hospice
Type of works: Q-Mark Fire Door Manufacture

Ahmarra manufactured bespoke timber doors and glazed screens for Rowans Hospice, on behalf of a local building firm.

Part of a refurbishment project, it was delivered through funding restricted to capital costs. The project spanned four years and was split into phases, allowing the hospice to continue providing palliative and end of life care with minimal disruption to patients and their families. The doors were supplied for bedrooms, therapeutic spaces, communal areas, bathrooms and storerooms.

Bringing the Outside In

The renovations focused on creating a comfortable and homely environment that prioritises wellbeing and promotes a sense of tranquility. Set in the countryside, the hospice’s new interior design fosters a connection with the natural environment that surrounds it. Organic tones and textures have been used throughout, and the building has been optimised to enhance the flow of natural light.

Designed to complement this theme, the internal doors and frames feature the warm timber tones of D F Richards’ American white oak crown cut, vertical grain wood veneer. Ahmarra is FSC® certified (FSC C018847), which means all of these doors and frames support responsible forestry. Ahmarra manufactured both Q-Mark certified FD30s fire & smoke rated doors, as well as non-fire rated doors for the hospice.

Maximising natural light, many of the communal area doors feature our VP02 wide vision panels, with glass supplied by Fire Glass UK. Ahmarra also manufactured floor to ceiling glazed screens for the reception area, which help to create a bright and welcoming entrance space.

Carefully considered, the nature-inspired design also features carpets throughout communal areas that resemble a path with either grass or sand at the edges, bedrooms have been designed with glazed bi-fold external doors allowing light to pour in whilst simultaneously being wide enough to enable beds to be wheeled into the shared courtyard so patients can enjoy sunshine and fresh air, and the café lounge incorporates a beautiful glazed gable window offering a view of the gardens.

Accessibility & Durability

Designed with accessibility in mind, doorsets are compliant with BS 8300 – the British Standard that relates to the design of buildings and their approach to meeting the needs of disabled people. As such, doors provide an effective clear opening width that ensures patients – including those with walking aids and wheelchairs – can pass freely through them. These robust doorsets incorporate a severe-duty core and are lipped on all four edges for longevity.

Our Chosen Charity
