Contractor: Morgan Sindall
Client: London Institute of Healthcare & Engineering
Type of works: Fire Door Manufacture

Ahmarra manufactured bespoke timber doorsets for The London Institute for Healthcare Engineering (LIHE), a new medical technology hub located within the Albert Embankment conservation area next to the Thames. The building was designed by HLM Architects and constructed by Morgan Sindall. The internal fire and non-fire rated doors were manufactured for offices, meeting rooms and lecture spaces, as well as corridors, toilets, store rooms and cleaner cupboards.

LIHE is a joint initiative led by King’s School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences and Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. Part of the vision for St Thomas’ MedTech Hub, LIHE will bring together the school’s expertise in healthcare engineering and the NHS Trust’s leading clinical practice. The objective of this collaboration is to ensure that research in healthcare engineering is rapidly translated into new medical technologies that will benefit patients sooner and enhance the standard of care.

Before embarking on the design of the building, HLM Architects carried out research that explored in detail the building-users’ preferences for their working environment – both in terms of how they could use the multi-functional space most effectively, and the attributes the environment should offer to best support their wellbeing, productivity and collaboration. Building users expressed a desire to be in proximity to nature and a preference for natural materials. This characteristic is reflected in the design of the doors. Manufactured from FSC® certified timber, the doors are faced with Formica’s Natural Oak (F1079) wood-effect laminate, as well as natural coloured laminates including Folkstone (F7927) pale grey and Sno White (F2296) warm white. These contemporary doors also feature stylish matt black ironmongery, including lever handles, hinges, cam-action closers, locks and protection plates, which complement the building’s dark grey signage.

These severe-duty pre-hung doorsets were manufactured in Ahmarra’s state of the art facility in Portsmouth. Specifying pre-hung Q-Mark certified fire doorsets, with all essential components supplied from a single source, ensures full compatibility, fire certification and compliance with Building Regulations. Complete doorsets have been independently verified to save time and cost for projects.
