What is an Automatic Fire Door Keep Clear Sign For?

Doors which are held open or swing-free, but which automatically revert to self-closing as soon as the fire alarm sounds, should feature the ‘Automatic Fire Door Keep Clear’ sign. This type of door is commonly found in busy corridors, where a self-closing door could be a nuisance, hindering the flow of traffic around the building.

Hold open devices which are connected to the fire alarm system are permitted, as long as they are properly maintained. This type of closer enables the door to stay open, but reverts to self-closing when the fire alarm sounds.

Some hold open devices also feature a ‘swing-free’ arm which enables the door to be opened from either side with very little force. Hospital corridor doors often feature this type of closer, as it allows staff to manoeuvre beds and porter trolleys around the wards with ease.
