Contractor: Mitie
Client: Miltoncross Academy
Type of works: Fire Door Manufacture & Installation
Ahmarra recently manufactured and installed over 110 fire doorsets for Miltoncross Academy in Portsmouth, on behalf of facility management company, Mitie.
Certified
Part of the secondary school’s fire safety upgrade project, the package included FD30 & FD60 fire-rated doors, and FD30s & FD60s fire & smoke rated doors supplied as a complete unit and third-party certified under the BM TRADA Q-Mark Timber Fire Door Manufacture scheme. This means that the door leaves were pre-hung within their frames and supplied with all essential hardware components (ironmongery, glazing systems, seals etc) factory fitted, as is standard with our Education Range.
Sustainable
Ahmarra is an FSC® certified (FSC C018847) company, as such, all of the bespoke timber doors and frames support responsible forestry.
Durable
Engineered to endure the demands of high-traffic school environments, each severe-duty doorset includes semi-concealed American White Ash lippings on all four edges, extending the door’s lifespan by shielding its core. Doors also incorporate stainless steel protection plates, for additional resilience.
Door Facings
Faced with a wide range of vibrant Polyrey high pressure laminates, different colours were chosen to define the various zones and functions throughout the school. For example, Bleu Carabies (B086) was selected for stairwell & corridor doors and Noir (N005) for the sports hall doors, whilst Pomme Verte (P092) was selected for music rooms and Genet (G031) for office spaces. These hygienic laminate door facings incorporate an anti-bacterial additive that is integrated within the sheet material, which eliminates 99.9% of bacteria within 24 hours. Highly durable, they are also scratch and impact resistant.
Accessible
Doorsets are manufactured in accordance with BS 8300 guidance, the British Standard focused on ensuring buildings are accessible and inclusive for disabled individuals. As such, doors offer an effective clear opening width that accommodates smooth passage throughout the building for staff, students, and visitors alike, including those using wheelchairs or walking aids.
To enhance natural light and visibility throughout the school, many classroom, office and communal area doors feature our standard VP01 vision panel, which meets the minimum zone of visibility as defined by BS 8300.
The doors are also fitted with Dormakaba cam action slide arm closers, which are highly efficient and require a low opening force, ensuring doors can be opened with ease by all building users.
Installation
Our experienced installation team delivered a flexible service, working around the needs of the school to minimise disruption. During term time, doors were installed in the evenings and overnight, while daytime work was carried out during the school’s summer break. All doors were fitted by our highly skilled, fully qualified BM TRADA Q-Mark Fire Door Installation team. Our team is CHAS accredited, and every member holds a valid CSCS card – helping to mitigate supply chain risk and ensure a safe, compliant working environment.
