Client: Local Authority
Type of works: Manufacture & Installation of Fire Doors

Ahmarra manufactured and installed Q-Mark certified FD30s fire doors, PAS 24 entrance doors and glazed screens for a council housing project, on behalf of a national contractor. The complex provides sheltered housing for Dorset residents that are 55 and over.

Ahmarra manufactured and installed fire & smoke rated doors for the communal spaces – including the corridors, stairwells, offices, storage areas and shared bathrooms – as well as dual certified fire & security entrance doors for the office and guest room. Third-party certified under the BM TRADA Q-Mark Fire Door Manufacture, these doorsets are supplied as a complete unit. This means that the door leaves are pre-hung in their frames, supplied with all essential hardware components (ironmongery, glazing systems, seals etc) and covered by a single fire certificate.

Accessibility

Designed with accessibility in mind, doorsets are compliant with BS8300 – the standard that relates to the design of buildings and their approach to meeting the needs of disabled people.

As such, doors provide an effective clear opening width that ensures residents – including those with walking aids and wheelchairs – can pass freely through them. Corridor doors feature Dormakaba electro magnetic closers, which hold the doors open, making it easier for residents to navigate the complex, yet enable the doors to close automatically if the fire alarm is activated. Elsewhere, doors are fitted with highly efficient Dormakaba cam action slide arm closers that require a low opening force, ensuring that elderly or infirm residents can open doors with ease.

Many of the communal area doorsets feature our VP01 vision panels, which meet the minimum zone of visibility as defined by BS 8300. Vision panels, as well as the glazed side screens, allow natural light to fill the communal spaces.

Enhanced Security

Tested to PAS24 enhanced security, the office and guest room entrance doorsets are BM TRADA Q-Mark Enhanced Security Door and Secured By Design certified, ensuring compliance with Part Q of Building Regulations.

Secured By Design (SBD) is an official police initiative that’s purpose is to improve the security of buildings and their surroundings, by incorporating crime prevention measures at the design stage. As such, these doors feature a highly secure multi-point locking system, whilst the Berwick lever handle and cylinder combination achieve the three-star level required to meet the TS007 security standard.

As well as providing security, these doors are also fire-rated, providing protection from fire and smoke, as well as opportunist thieves, vandalism and attack.

Design, Durability & Sustainability

Doors are faced with Polyrey’s Blanc Megève (B070) high pressure laminate, which is impact, scratch and stain resistant. Polyrey laminates also incorporate an anti-bacterial additive that kills 99.9% of bacteria within 24 hours.

These durable doors feature contrasting American White Oak concealed lippings – a trim of solid wood applied to all four edges of the door that promotes longevity by protecting its severe-duty core. Doors also feature stainless steel protection plates.

Ahmarra are FSC® certified (FSC C018847), which means all of these sustainable timber doors support responsible forestry.

Fire Door Installation

These fire doorsets replaced the premises’ previous fire doors and were fitted by our fully qualified Q-Mark Fire Door Installation team whilst the building was operational. As such, our installers were mindful to keep disruption to an absolute minimum and respectfully worked around the residents’ needs. The team are also CHAS Contractors’ Health And Safety scheme and SafeContractor accredited, and all of our installers hold a valid CSCS card, mitigating supply chain risk and ensuring a safe environment.

The main contractor selected Ahmarra to manufacture and install the doors having successfully partnered on numerous local authorities’ fire safety upgrade schemes over the years.

Recent projects have included schools, retirement homes, military barracks and civic offices.
